Somatic Psychotherapy

Somatic Psychotherapy

Somatic psychological approaches and techniques include a method of healing that allows one to experience and witness their body in the present moment. Soma means “body”, psyche means “mind”. Therefore Somatic Psychotherapy is working with the body-mind interface and treating the whole human being. Somatic based treatment can help you learn to go beyond standard talk therapy to customize treatment for deep-rooted trauma. Often we “think”” that we can overcome problems with cognitive reasoning alone. Somatic interventions can help clients get “unstuck” from barriers that they cannot think or talk their way out of. Somatic therapy is best for clients seeking deeper internal shifts, outside of cognitive awareness. People often adapt to distressing or traumatic experiences by disconnecting from their body, such as compartmentalization and minimization. These strategies can be a helpful survival strategy and necessary in the short-term, but ultimately become maladaptive and unhelpful in the long term. In Somatic therapy the ultimate goal is to become a less compartmentalized person and live a more whole embodied life. The body’s wisdom comes forth when attended to, or related to, with kindness, curiosity and patience. The body is capable of repair and healing at any time and the body is the most important place for healing and transformation.

Therapy can be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about ourselves, to compassionately examine the patterns in our lives that leave us feeling stuck or frustrated, and to ultimately strengthen our relationships. This process of self-exploration often leads to people feeling more confident and connected to themselves and more capable of managing the obstacles in their lives.
